Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media in addition to a public speaking Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received awards in her field, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency, a website designed to provide education on gender roles within popular culture, is directed by Sarkeesian. Removing gender stereotypes is the main goals of her organization. However, Sarkeesian also is keen to draw attention to things like discrimination and harassment of women who are online. With a master's in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Sarkeesian was fascinated by female issues as well as feminism from the age of a child. In 2009, when she was still enrolled at a university, Sarkeesian founded the website Feminist Frequency. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series on gender representation in video games and found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. The harassment, however, did not dissuade her. This only helped her reputation as a feminist journalist. She has won numerous awards in recognition of her many notable contributions to the field of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women within pop culture stories.
